They look at where they work, where they live, and how they can surprise the winner. The they get in touch with a friend or family member to help them spring the big news on the unsuspecting winner.
In the past, the winners have been tricked into thinking they were attending work meetings or wedding re-enactments. This year, Stephanie Dee's friends told her that they were having an early birthday party for her. Two of her friends knew that she had won, and called together her loved ones to help her celebrate her prize. They were also able to leave the door open, and to send Stephanie out to greet the HGTV crew.
So yes, the event was staged for HGTV - but Stephanie and her husband weren't the ones who were in on the big secret.

PERSONALLY, I WOULD HAVE SAID THANK YOU VERY MUCH, AND THEN I WOULD HAVE SAID THANK YOU AT LEAST 50 MORE TIMES. I AM SURE THAT MOST PEOPLE WHO WATCHED THE PRESENTATION, WOULD VERY MUCH APPRECIATE READING ON THIS WEBSITE, WHAT THE REASON WAS FOR HER GREAT DISPLAY OF UNDERAPPRECIATION, AND THE OBVIOUS LACK OF ANY APPRECIATION AT ALL. i watched the video and could not believe her non- reaction to winning this house. i was embaressed for the lady who was presenting her with this exciting news. This lady showed absolutely no enthusiasm whatsoever, it kind of took the fun out of the show. Im sure she was in shock (inside) and also very shy and didn’t want to be on a camera, it was obvious. But i think when she watches herself on the show she will see just how in ungrateful she seemed to be.. Oh well, everyone shows emotions in different ways.
Lori, I agree, it’s hard to know how you’re going to react to big news like this. It’s hard to know what people are feeling on the inside when they are so quiet about big news like this.
