If you've been waiting on tenterhooks to see who HGTV's 2009 Dream Home winner of a gorgeous home in Sonoma, California, the wait is over.

Chi-Lan Lieu, host of HGTV's I Want That! Tech Toys show, surprised Cheryl Smith of Lakeland, Florida with balloons and the news that she is this year's big winner of HGTV's $2.2 million Dream Home prize.
The surprise announcement actually took place nearly a week before the episode was aired, but the Smiths had to keep their news a big secret until after the public announcement was made during the 2009 Dream Home Special that aired on Sunday, March 15th.
And what a surprise it was. The couple were cleaning up after dinner, sans makeup or even shoes. But the shock and joy on Cheryl's face made her look gorgeous nevertheless.
About 2009 Dream Home Winner Cheryl Smith
Cheryl and her husband Joe certainly seem deserving of a big prize. They are both retired, after training race horses in Michigan. They moved to Florida to be closer to one of their sons, and live in a small cottage that is more than 100 years old.
When asked what winning the Dream Home would mean to them, Cheryl said that having a home and a car that were paid-for would mean she'd be able to help send her eight grand-kids to college.
Cheryl and Joe seem to be sweepstakes fans; at the very least, they have been entering the HGTV Dream Home Sweepstakes for about ten years. They said that they entered nearly every day from start to end of each sweepstakes. Cheryl's advice, after nine years of disappointment: "Never give up."
