Would You Pay Someone to Enter Sweepstakes For You?

Friday July 10, 2009
I used to do a lot of freelance writing before I joined About.com, and I occasionally still look over freelance listings to see what kind of work is out there. So imagine my surprise when I clicked on an ad for "Data Entry needed - Very Easy Work" and found someone looking for a person to enter her into sweepstakes.

The basic idea of the ad seemed to be that the individual would give her entry information to the freelancer to use with Roboform. The freelancer would enter her into approximately 500 sweepstakes a day, for a price of around $67 for the month.

There are some automatic sweepstakes services out there that specialize in entering people into giveaways, but this was the first I had heard about individuals hiring individuals to do the work for them.

On one hand, using a single person to enter just you into sweepstakes would avoid most automatic sweepstakes restrictions, as far as I can see (although it would prohibit the freelancer from entering sweepstakes that state that individuals must enter themselves into the giveaway).

But on the other hand, this is a lot of trust to put in a stranger. You'd have to hope that the freelancer wouldn't abuse your personal information, and you'd also have to hope that he or she would be careful enough to ensure that the forms were properly filled out and submitted.

Many sweepstakes don't send email confirmations, so you'd have to rely on the honesty of the freelancer. And from the freelancer's end, that's a lot of time spent for $60 a month. It wouldn't be surprising if he or she tried to cut corners to save time.

Plus, it's very expensive. Automatic sweepstakes services give you nearly a year's worth of service for the same price (although they have their own drawbacks. Read more in my article, Can Automatic Sweepstakes Services Help Me Win More?)

What do you think? Would you pay a freelancer to enter you in sweepstakes? Would you do it for a short period of time, if you're going to be on vacation or otherwise too busy to enter for a while? Take my quick poll, and click on the "Comments" button below to share your opinion.

No way would I do this. I am retired military and I do these as a hobby? I would never pay a freelancer to enter me in any sweepstakes, even if going on a vacation (that’s why they made laptops) But seriously though, I enter only for what I want to win. I mean isn’t that like cheating. I am sure that people do this everyday and to give my information to a total stranger just isn’t worth it. How would I know that they did in fact enter 500 a day, what’s to say they just entered 100. It’s just not worth it. To me that’s not being a true sweeper.

The question of whether it’s cheating is very interesting. Assuming that we’re only talking about sweepstakes that don’t prohibit other people from entering for you — is it cheating if you do something that’s not prohibited in the rules?

I imagine myself winning as I enter my sweepstakes. Where would the fun be in having someone do it for you?

Sweepstakes entering is like my hobby, I do it in my spare time. I wouldn’t quite call it fun, but it’s not a chore.

A lot of people don’t realize how much dedication it takes to win, I would be annoyed at a person hiring someone else to do it for them.

I enjoy entering sweepstakes myself as I enjoy surfing the net. I do not think it is a good idea to pay someone to enter you into sweepstake contests.

Pay someone to enter sweepstakes for me when I have a houseful of bored teenagers? LOL No way!
I’m joking, but there is no way I’d pay someone to enter sweeps for me. First of all, I enjoy doing it, and second, I’m far too paranoid to trust some stranger to do it correctly. If you want something done right, do it yourself, lol! Plus, I really enjoy entering them myself.

I wouldn’t be interested in doing this kind of job for someone else (what is that, like a dollar an hour). While it may not be “cheating” it definitely seems to go against the spirit of the sweeper.
