HGTV's Dream Home 2011 Winner Leaked!

By March 10, 2011

Follow me on:

A commenter on HGTV's Dream Home blog going by the name of JohnSmith2510 has leaked the name of the 2011 HGTV Dream Home winner, well in advance of HGTV's official announcement, which is scheduled for March 16th.

HGTV confirmed the rumors today in a blog post called And the Winner Is... Although JohnSmith2510's original comment has been removed, you can read some of the reactions to it on HGTV's blog post, It Could Be You. Look at the posts made on March 8th and later.

This year's Dream Home winner is Eric Makstenieks of Hinsdale, Illinois. Apparently, JohnSmith2510 is a neighbor who saw Monica Pederson arrive to give Eric Makstenieks the good news and to film his reaction for the 2011 Dream Home Special, which will air on March 19th.

Eric Makstenieks entered the Dream Home Sweepstakes daily, and his name was drawn from among nearly 80 million entries to win the home, the car, and $500,000 cash.

The Dream Home Special is still due to be aired on March 19th on HGTV. Be sure to tune in to see the winning reaction live and to get more details about the Dream Home.

FYI the Dream Home special will be aired March 19 (not March 16). Thanks for the update on the lucky winner. I am touring the home this Sunday, yay! Tours held until March 20.

Thanks for pointing that out, Maybenextyear, I’ve changed it in the post now. I hope you’ll enjoy the tour, that sounds like a lot of fun!

The2011 Dream Home Sweepstakes was a lesson in the power of positive thinking, you win even when you lose through all the dreaming and thinking surrounding it. For instance, letting your self allow the thought that you could win. This Dream Home in particular was so easy and homelike that even coming from a small ranch home you could see yourself feeling comfortable in your skin in that new Dream Home. I spruced up, had the lights on and the coffee pot brewing for you at HGTV and felt this was really a possibility. Guess I just have to update my own home now, but thanks to you and congrats to the winners, how phenominal for them!

I have to admit I’m amused by this flub. JohnSmith2510 didn’t do anything wrong; he was just a sharp-eyed neighbor. At any rate, I hope Eric enjoys the home (or the money, which is the option I’d have picked if I’d won — I like my current home too much to leave).

You know what…I must say, I spruced up too. Then it dawned on me, if it’s being aired, and it’s not live…then the winner is already selected. It was exciting to see them on the television though…So, life continues. And you never know; it may be YOU or I next time. Blessings to the winners.

The funny thing is, the selection process is clearly outlined in the rules of the sweepstakes. If everyone had taken the time to actually read the rules, they would’ve known ahead of time that the winner would be selected on March 2nd, the “ambush” would be on March 12th, and the show would air on March 19th. The show was not a “live” selection of the winner, just the announcement of the already selected winner taking place. People are so up in arms over this! And the neighbor WAS wrong in leaking the winner. Just not the right thing to do.

I wasn’t a neighbor. I found out from the family.

I made the mistake in 2010 contest to believe and dream and see myself in the dream house then lost. One winner and 70 million losers doesn’t seem nice. This year I filled out the forms but never had a glimmer of hope that I would actually win. It didn’t hurt as much this year.
Anyway, so much for the dreaming. Maybe next year….

Thanks! Johnsmith2510, I think it’s totally inappropriate of you to announce somethink was supposedly to be annoymous and announced on March 19th 2011. It’s makes we wonder whether this sweepstakes was on the up and up. Thanks for dashing my hopes and dreams.

Meanwhile, kids go hungry, budgets are skewed, suicide bombers are taking innocents with them, Haiti is still far from functional, tornadoes destroy the homes and trailers of people without any dreams left, and Lebanon and Syria fight for independence and democracy. Any one of these would be more worth the indignation posted in the comments above. Why aren’t we as moved to act by the stuff that really matters?

You are welcome. I actually think the family should be the one to blame they violated the confidentiality agreement by blabbing everything.

It is evident the Dream Home winner is notified well-ahead of time and the “live” presentation is not live. The 2012 winner was notified in Acme, Pa. at 8PM on March 17 and it was cold and snowing. I googled the weather for March 17 2012 and it was 72 degrees at 8PM in Acme, Pa. and the weather had been warm for over a week, so the presentation was taped well-ahead of the air date and contest results.

Scott, you’re absolutely right. In fact, last year, the Dream Home winner was leaked well in advance of the air date of the special.
