According to the We Will Find You advertisement, winning packages of Kit Kat, Aero, and Yorkie bars sold in the United Kingdom will be equipped with GPS units. When the candy bar's wrapper is opened, the GPS will alert Nestle's team, who will board a helicopter to track down the winner and instantly award them with 10,000 GB pounds in cash.
This sounds like a truly exciting way to receive a prize. Imagine walking down the street, chewing absentmindedly on your candy bar, when a helicopter lands in front of you and awards you with a huge cash prize. Wow!
But on the other hand, I see a few disturbing things about this sweepstakes:
- Violation of Privacy:
Every sweepstakes involves trading some privacy for the chance to win. Whether it's a minor thing like sharing your name and email address with the sponsor or a larger slice of privacy like agreeing to receive marketing information, you are willingly handing over some of your personal information. But having the sponsor actually track your physical location and show up wherever you are? To me that seems a little... creepy. What if you happen to be somewhere where you don't want to advertise your location with a helicopter landing nearby?
- Verifying Eligibility:
So the team lands at the winner's feet and hands over the prize, right? But what if the person who bought the candy bar isn't even eligible to win? Do they have to hand over ID, fill out the affidavit, have a notary there to witness? Or do they just not worry about whether the winner is eligible or not?
- How Fast Can They Really Get There?
The UK might be smaller than the US, but I don't think that it's so small that you can reliably count on getting in a helicopter and locating a person before he or she finishes eating a candy bar and then throws away the wrapper. Does that mean that whoever is standing closest to the trash can wins? Does a little alarm go off warning people to wait around for the helicopter? I don't know, but it does seem a little strange.
