Who Won the Publishers Clearing House's February 28th 2013 SuperPrize Sweepstakes?

By March 1, 2013

Follow me on:

On February 28, 2013, the PCH Prize Patrol surprised another lucky winner with an oversized check. While the winning number wasn't returned for the $5,000 a Week Forever prize, the winner still received a life-changing prize of one million dollars. So who was the lucky winner of the Superprize Drawing #1830?

The Prize Patrol headed down to LaPlace, Louisiana to surprise the winner, Elise Gutierrez. When Elise Gutierrez answered the door and saw the Prize Patrol there, she covered her mouth and bent over with shock. She was carrying a plastic grocery bag, which she waved wordlessly when she realized it was still in her hand as she was being filmed. PCH Prize Patrol member Dave Sawyer asked her; "Have you been shopping?" Elise answered, "Yes, I have." "Well, would you like to do some more shopping?" he asked, holding the check. "Yes! Yes, I would!" gasped Elise. She said she had been entering Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes every day for years. "I never thought it would happen!" she said.

Elise said that she and her husband had just moved back into their house, which had been flooded by Hurricane Isaac. That million-dollar prize will surely come in handy!

If you'd like to see the touching winning moment for yourself, you can watch the February 2013 PCH Winner Announcement on YouTube.

Disappointed you didn't win? Don't worry, another giveaway has already started, with another chance to win a million dollars and more. Good luck!

Edited to add: I've been getting so many questions about the letters where PCH says someone in your area with your initials will win, that I went to the source and asked the Senior Vice President of Publishers Clearing House to clear up the question. Here's the result: Will Someone with My Initials/In My Area Really Win the PCH Sweepstakes? Click that link to find the answer.

(1) Regina Ellis says:

Well I am kinda feeling fooled and lied to because pch told me sone one with my initials would win so they are not being very truthful. So I am out and not going bsck.

(2) Melissa Hackney says:

THEY ARE LIARS! They sent my mom letter after letter after letter about giveaway #1830, stating that she “was definitely on the list”, and that “someone with the initials MSH (my mom) from our specific area was definitely going to win this giveaway” and continued on to say that, “our local news media stations had been contacted” My mom sent every reply back by the deadlines that were set for them and she even purchased numerous items (even though it says that it doesn’t increase your chances of winning), and all of the items were cheap and poor quality. If they are telling everyone that “someone with your initials is definitely going to win”, that’s fraud. Scam. Fraud. Cheat. BS.

(3) Darcy says:

All of their advertising is misleading and meant only to keep you trying and buying over and over and over. The key is to submit the entries but don’t buy anything. You don’t have to buy to enter. It’s like the state lotteries, someone is going to win, so it’s up to you whether you want to keep trying or not. Unlike the state lotteries, this one doesn’t have to cost you a dime to try.

March 1, 2013 at 10:28 am
(4) Pat Pomarico says:

I will never send a reply back again. Too many times you must reply to be kept on the list and to no avail. I feel I was lied to also.

(5) melba says:

iam very disappointed, my problem is, I trust people and I felt pch was the real thing, but again i was fooled and lied too. Iam devestated and feeling taken for a fool.

(6) E Martin says:

Our entry form said that someone from the Atlanta area with the initials RJM would win. If everyone is being told these things and then someone from Louisiana wins. I truly feel deceived. Is there any kind of legal action that can be taken…i.e. class action lawsuit.

(7) Kathie Person says:

I am so happy for her/them. It sounds like they could really use it. Finally someone in that area getting some help! Okay, now it’s my turn!!

(8) Ann Rutledge says:

Add me to the list. I was notified many time’s that someone with my initials and also in my zip code area would win a major prize on 02/28. I enter every day. Guess what –I did not win. I canot find information where anyone in my area won yesterday.

(9) Ann Rutledge says:

Add me to the list!!! I have been notified several times that someone with my initials and also in my zipcode would win a major prize on 02/28. I cannot find information that anuone in my area won anything. I enter every day. I am very disappointed in PCH.

(10) Mary Ellen Lepak says:

Hey Players:
this is a game. It is meant to be wish and hope, no guarantees. the more you play the better your chances, but then maybe not.. It is still a game. You don’t have to buy anything and the only cost to you is a bit of time. Drop out so I have a better chance of winning. I too have been playing for many years and before that I played the mail ones too. I NEVER won.Maybe my turn is next.

March 1, 2013 at 12:58 pm
(11) Donald says:

I’m sorry there are so many people who don’t understand what PCH is saying about someone with your initials winning. They aren’t saying someone in your area will win the megaprize. They NEVER say that. I receive mailings all the time. They say that someone in your area with your initials will win a prize – usually they say this concerning $100. People please learn to read and READ the fine print as well!!!!! PCH is a legitimate company. Also they aren’t saying you have to keep entering to stay on the list, yes the wording is meant to make some people misunderstand that, but if you have a certain level of intelligence or if you don’t and you read everything, you should be able to discern what it’s saying. I certainly do and think everyone can, excepting some who are mentally challenged. READ READ READ and you can and will understand! Don’t just blindly enter a contest. Know what the rules and READ THE FINE PRINT. I can’t stress this enough. IF YOU READ EVERYTHING – YOU WILL UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING!!!

March 1, 2013 at 1:10 pm
(12) Judy says:

My Initials are JER & someone was going to win with those initials – BS. I am so done with PCH. My husband has been trying to get me to stop for the last couple of years, but NO I had to keep ongoing. I love it when they send a letter stating (3) people have been selected to win a certain amount of money guaranteed – but guess what WE DIDN’T. I love when they send letters stating where the flowers will be coming from and when they are going to stay when they come into town – GO AWAY. I WILL NEVER SEND ANOTHER FORM BACK OR EVEN PLACE A ORDER – I AM FINALLY LISTENING TO MY HUSBAND – I AM DONE!!!!!!!

March 1, 2013 at 1:20 pm
(13) ray says:

People relax…. It was a givaway, not a handout. Your chances of winning were one in many many millions…So why the long face?….come on…Be happy for the woman…She deserved it… And lets try to win again!! I say its my turn next!!

(14) david morgan says:

I have been playing pch since i been 18 yrs old im 38 nowand still never won anything i leaved in oklahoma and now i lived tx. Im glad to hear that she won but it seem to me that every one up north is the one who is getting all the winning.

March 1, 2013 at 4:10 pm
(15) gina says:

I agree with the gentleman that said, its not a hand out!! PCH isn’t twisting your arms to play its like the lotteryPCH says no purchase to enter. READ people!! The other gentleman that said it always seem that someone up north wins everything I live in the mid south and you hardly ever hear of anyone winner anything in the south!! Im so happy for the couple that won PCH they truely could use it after what they have gone through. Hoping I’m the next one; ~>

March 1, 2013 at 4:37 pm
(16) Maria says:

I truly am convince that this is a fraud… Has always been and continues to be years and years after if was found bogus. I too received the letters staying someone with my initials was a winner and someone in my area was for sure a winner and it so happens that the winner is over 1,000 miles from my state! What’s wrong with that picture?

March 1, 2013 at 4:39 pm
(17) Sandra Grauschopf, Guide to Contests says:

Since so many people were asking about winners with their initials and in their areas, I contacted PCH and wrote an article with the answers: http://contests.about.com/od/publishersclearinghouse/qt/Will-Someone-With-My-Initials-In-My-Area-Really-Win-The-Pch-Sweepstakes.htm

Please give it a read!

(19) Suze says:

I don’t understand the comment in your article “While the winning number wasn’t returned for the $5,000 a Week Forever prize”. What number, I thought that winners were chosen based on their entry. I responded to at least one email daily from PCH for the $5,000/week for life sweepstakes, within the time limit mentioned, and didn’t get a “number” to return. It would be nice if it was better explained just how the winners are chosen.
Congratulations to the winner!!!

What a scam 1830 my butt ! My husband also had that # We are done also.

March 1, 2013 at 8:48 pm
(21) Shirley says:

I am severly disappointed. They said someone with my initials was going to win in my zip code. I told all my friends that I might have won something., especially when they sent an entry asking for my phone number. I barely slept and the next day, I hardly left the house even though I had errands to do. After waiting and waiting, I realized that it was all a sham. Two days later, I am still hurting and feel incredibly stupid. I have sunk into a depression. Thanks a lot, PCH.

March 1, 2013 at 8:56 pm
(22) Donna says:

1830 is the sweepstakes giveaway number not your prize number. Your prize number is ON your entry form, so yes it’s based on your entry form . The number drawn for the $5000 prize was not returned , hence the $5000 week was forfeited because the person did not return their entry. As for initials it does not say someone in your area will win with your initials nor does it say someone with your initials will win the $5000/wk, it just says someone with your intials will win $100… its plain as day on the paper. And the $1000 prize says someone in local tv viewing area. I agree with the” YOU NEED TO READ”. There is nothing misleading in any of it. Yea sure i wish i was the winner, don’t we all.

March 1, 2013 at 8:59 pm
(23) Sarah says:

People! It can sound misleading, and I don’t understand why they said the winning # didn’t come in for the 5K/wk for life for ever. But someone did win 1M. I actually won 1k about 15 years ago, before internet entries. I just got a check via FedX and it was real. I too am disappointed that they said no one turned in the winning #. Seems suspicious to me. But since I did win once, I will keep trying. It is only a sweepstakes, not a guarantee.

(24) elishia says:

I was told someone with my initials was the winner to. I think its all a bunch of BS. Do they pay people to pretend to win this BIG jackpot just to keep stringing people along. I’m done with all that crap. Spamming up my email address everyday. Someone even sent me some kind of email scam trying to get me to send money for a fake win. LMAO TOO MUCH

March 1, 2013 at 11:12 pm
(25) kim Torres says:

Yea I got the same emails and yea they are spamming us….. how bout a class action withdrawal from receiving emails from them… advertise a date for everyone u can think of on same day block their. Emails they will get the point that they are very misleading and worry u to death while they are lying to your face.

(26) jo says:

I saw my Mom get these for years telling her she was on the list of 5 winners. After her passing I started gettting in my name 6 to8 sweepstakes a week. I did enter some and order from them. This was the last one I will play there they told me like all the rest out there that someone in our zip code was one of the big winners. To me they need to see why it always on one side of the country, Sounds odd to me.

I am entering this from 2009 and they never assigned me any number. If they don’t assign me number then how will win. I am tiered on waiting to win from almost 5 yrs so I unsubscrib the emails I am receiving from PCH. Good by PCH

March 4, 2013 at 12:11 pm
(38) bobbys pen says:

PCH is the brainchild of a marketing guru – why do you think the letters come with all kinds of over-priced garbage you can buy? People will buy just in hopes to win. It is worse than the lottery…at least you spend a $1 not ten dollars to buy a trinket in monthly installments.

(39) Greg in Ohio says:

For all the ‘deceived’ ‘mislead’ individuals with comments… The notices that say ‘Someone with the iniitals…in your area is definitely going to win’ is for other drawings that are ongoing.

(40) Melvin miller says:

I find it odd that all the winners are in the south or eastern u.s like all those winners in texas. So I was wanting to know that on these findings are you based in the south and just discrimanate. Against anyone who enters from the north west or central states.

March 5, 2013 at 7:13 pm
(41) Zach says:

PCH. Sucks!!!

I don’t understand why you have to keep entering every single day. I hate that they threaten you with if dont’t respond by a deadline. I am not going to waste anymore time. What a scam, they try sell cheap crap every time you enter.

March 7, 2013 at 12:49 pm

I think we need to file legal action against pch for false information and their lies.

(43) Kim Nash says:

As I’m reading the comments it’s comical! Let me get this straight… You want to sue PCH because you didn’t win and don’t fully understand the game you’re entering to Play? 1830 is my number? Come on people you can’t be that naive! LMBO I’m hoping the post are from folks being butt hurt because they didnt win and really don’t belive they were mislead. Read Please

(47) sjortiz says:

Who won the $5,000 Forever Prize. What do you mean the winning number was not returned? If the first number picked has not been returned, don’t you pick another number? That is whet we are led to believe.
I have returned every envelope and many many e-mail messages, and still, your mail tells me I am not enrolled unless I return these time-consuming entries again and again. I often buy the products too, which I use and enjoy. However, it is never ending. How do I know when I have truly returned the winning number? I get tons of messages on my e-mail to “search” for something but there is never an explanation for how that works? What do I search for? How does that help me enter the contest?

I am done with you now, PCH. If I were paid for the hours spent searching and pasting and returning your envelopes, I would have earned at least $5,000. You have reached the end of this sucker’s patience limit. Byee.

March 17, 2013 at 10:08 am
(48) David says:

Yeah, I know it looks like a scam…I’ve been entering since 1966 when you have to mail back the entries…just remember, that you DO NOT have to buy anything and they cannot tie purchases to winning (as a requirement). I just scroll down through the stuff offered and click “submit”..even though they say “A purchase about be appreciated”…I always say “A big win would be appreciated”…since I’m been playing for 47 years…LOL.

April 8, 2013 at 11:36 am
(49) Joe Walkr says:

There was never any information about the One Million winner on march 29, 2013. I called PCH and asked. The lady said that the person, whose number was drawn, had never sent the entry back in so that his number would be registered to his name. Well, How convenient is that, as an excuse to not have to pay out the million dollars?! What about all of us who do order and send our entries back in? Draw again, “for crying out loud” and give us a chance. Can you imagine how that cuts down the chances for a winner… think of all the PCH envelopes that are pitched in the trash, yet all of those numbers are in the same pool to be drawn from as the rest of us who do send ours back in. Also who knows? They could often say, “well it was a non-entry number” The information that I read always says if I don’t respond then that number is thrown out without a chance to win. Stick a fork in me, I’m done!!

(51) heidi says:

people, people, people…i know how deceiving all of their entry notices can seem that say “Someone with the iniitals…in your area is definitely going to win’ ” but you have to keep reading the next phrase and pay attention to the wording…it goes on to say something like [if your returned superprize number matches the winning number chosen, you will be the guaranteed winner] , if read correctly there is no deceit…there can be no lawsuit. if you dont like the way they do things…go ahead…drop out…don’t send back your entry…less competition for me. :) the chances of winning are astronomically smaller than winning the lottery anyway!

Yes, We were hooked and reeled in. My winning number was also 1830 like a lot of other people, and told the winner would be announced on March 30th at the 11:00 PM news hour. There are a lot of frauds out there. I will never put another stamp on any such mail. Publisher’s Clearing House or not. Bad, Bad, Bad to PCH. If it wasn’t you them you need to sue who ever they’d are that claim to be you.

May 1, 2013 at 3:44 pm
(57) Sandra Grauschopf, Guide to Contests says:

P Freeman — your winning number was NOT 1830. That’s the sweepstakes’ number. PCH’s Sweepstakes #1830 is the SuperPrize giveaway — and that’s the same for everyone.

(64) Sally Martin says:

If you read the fine print every big giveaway says in case the correct number is not drawn a secondary prize of one million will be awarded to the next eligible entry

this gets them off the hook for the one mill for life, ten million, and other huge payouts

a SECONDARY prize will be awarded to the next eligible entry
so dont hold your breath for that mill a year or ten mill

do not forget the taxes on those huge amounts and the processing costs to get the cash to a winner

a blessing or a curse?

(68) Andrew says:

People seriously. Read the damn emails a little closer. It doesn’t say you are definitely going to win it says someone with those initials could win. There is no deception in any of it. You are playing against millions of other players from all across the country. Chances that you will win are not that great. You can’t win if you don’t play. You don’t need to spend any money on anything. Stick to pch.com, and their affiliated lottery, search, or game site and you should be fine.

One of the many problems with PCH is the incredibly long odds of winning. You have a better chance of being struck by lightening twice while riding a unicorn than winning any of their prizes. I think your time would be better spend entering the thousands of other sweeps and contests online. I hope PCH withers away and dies.

I must agree with above comments…the ‘someone wit your initials’ is VERY unethical if this does not happen. Why do they bother to go so far? I feel these comments deserve answers, so if everyone chooses to make these comments more public more people will become aware of these unethical practices! posting on Facebook/Twitter are great ways to alert their attention to this issue!

Good grief people! Are you devastated when you don’t win the lottery? The chances of winning are teeny tiny. All you have to do to enter is hit a couple of buttons. It’s not like you lost your life savings.

I was told I had won instantly on a lot of the PCH letters sent to my home , but never got a penny. Now they’ve sent to me collectors. I don’t have a penny to my name, I’m disabled, and when PCH said numerous times that I had won , that someone in my area with my Initials in my zip code all that leading me to believe that now ill be able to get out of debt , but no, it’s a lie. You can’t take from someone that has nothing. False Hope. The Only True Hope is In JESUS CHRIST.!

mailing in enter forms… what does it have on the official rules Enter for free you don’t have to buy anything to enter. Just mail the entry form included in this letter the entry form said “THIS FORM FOR ORDERERS ONLY!” So I’m sending in the empty envelope is this correct with the “red” Customer ID label stuck to it?..
and is there a place to look at the winning # instead of the name.

(84) Nick Yach says:

Seems to me that in all the dozens if not hundreds of emails that it did say someone most definately has to win. So if the number drawn was not returned makes no sense since how can it be drawn if it wasn’t used or put in the hat? Also then why wasn’t another drawn since it has to be given away? Personally I’m sick of all the email each day. It is ridiculous and way too time consuming. Especially now that I know they are using numbers that were not used in the drawing. Try doing that in a raffle and see what happens to you when you announce sorry folks, the winning ticket wasn’t given out!

I hope this isn’t a dumb question, but what does it mean that the winning number wasn’t returned? Does this mean that they just didn’t draw out for that specific prize, or was the winner supposed to have the winning number? Just curious.

I still have the winning #1830. I did turn the number in & PCH told me initials RCH was in Oklahoma to win! Does not look like the winner had those initials or in Oklahoma. I think that is messed up! I would like for PCH to contact me & tell me what happened to my entry? Oh & PCH said my address is not my address!!! Lived at this address for over ten years. I guess i dont know where i live??? THANKS A LOT PCH ARE YOU FOR REAL OR A SCAM????

September 16, 2013 at 2:41 pm

Ronnie, that question has been answered SO MANY times in this thread alone. 1830 is the number of the giveaway, it’s not your winning number. Also, read: Will Someone with My Initials Win the PCH SuperPrize?.

Come on, people! You can’t SERIOUSLY be upset about PCH not declaring you a winner!!!! It is all stated in every email that you, yourself are not the guaranteed winner of anything. If y’all took a minute to read the ENTIRE page, you would clearly see this. There is no scam, they are not forcing you to buy anything. All of you idiots that are mad for not being awarded “guaranteed” sums of money amaze me for making it this far in life. I weep for the future of this country because of people like you. SMH.

BUT I do know that someone wins. I lived in Texas and a town in No TX had a winner & later became mayor of that town – BUT no his real location was never printed (a fake town/st was used)- the best way to Keep people from bothering you.

not envying others when their time comes. do what is right and right will follow you. you may not won this time but just as you gave up your chance came and you could miss out. christine j

I feel like everyone else. They build you up and then beg you to order one thing, and they let you know if you ordered or not. Then they have another card in the envelope saying if you don’t order use this card or call this eight hundred number. Yes there products are not very good. I just bought a touch lamp with a clock in front and it keeps falling out. I’ve been entering publishers clearing house for over thirty years and never won anything. I’m done with them so from now on their envelopes are going in to the trash.

(107) Jas Meckon says:

My mom played the PCH contest game for more than 30 years! She bought a lot of magazines and other junk. Yep, she understood that there was never a sure thing that she would win anything. She was a person from poor beginnings and she lived a life filled with hope that was not fulfilled. She prayed that Ed McMann would come to her house with the prize patrol, and then Ed dropped out. She wasn’t stupid; she had the same hopes that so many Americans have trying to find a way to reach a better life, and maybe someday she would get lucky with PCH – she never did. She died in April 2011 as her hopes finally became worthless to keep holding onto anymore. I have entered the PCH contests, since mom died – but I see no practical reason to continue. The emails which PCH has sent me threatening me with disqualification if I don’t waste hours of my life playing their stupid games is the final straw. I do not and will not buy PCH promoted products. If PCH decides to give me a prize then ok, but I am not waiting for it to happen. I believe I have a better chance finding a hundred dollar bill on the side walk every day, or a stranger walking up and handing me a suit case filled with money – LOL. Hope is a powerful thing; I encourage everyone to find some for yourselves, but please don’t put it in PCH’s giveaways. Even of you won a million a year for life, some damn fool has to keep buying their crap for you to get it. Sad, so very sad shame on PCH.

(108) Jas Meckon says:

And the worst part of dealing with PCH is that my JUNK emails have exploded to over 100 per day since entering their contests.

(109) blesssed says:

how sad that so many people have high hopes of winning this thing. I enter maybe every 10 years with no real hopes of winning and I only do it one or two times b/c they continue to bombard you with more emails to enter. Its all really a game, people should not put their trust in these lotteries in hopes of a better future it leads to stress, anger, and disappointment. There is a lot of fine print that we all bypass and get mislead. All that you have is what GOD has provided. Stick with HIM and HE will give you more than what PCH ever could.

Don’t you think it’s funny that the “wining number” for the “mega prize” never seems to be returned so they don’t have to give it away? I’m not at all surprised.
