More Sweepstakes Will Be Open to Puerto Rico by November's End
According to legal services company, Martindale.com's article, Puerto Rico Revises Sweepstakes Regulations, the new changes in legislation will eliminate the requirement that sweepstakes rules be offered in Spanish, allow abbreviated rules to be included on packaging and marketing materials instead of demanding that the full rules be included every time the sweepstakes is advertised, clear up ambiguities about what is considered to be illegal consideration, and make the requirements about publicizing the winners easier to follow.
The changes make Puerto Rican sweepstakes law more similar to general sweepstakes law in the United States. This means that it will be less difficult for companies to include Puerto Rican residents in their sweepstakes, although some companies may still choose to exclude Puerto Rico from their eligibility list.
The announcement was made by Puerto Rico's Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, Luis G. Rivera Marín. According to LegalBytes' article, Puerto Rico Revises Regulations: Good Odds for More Promotions, Marin said:
"For many years our laws made it impossible for companies to conduct national sweepstakes here, and consequently we have been excluded from the opportunity to take part in these potentially valuable promotions. We enter a new chapter now whereby our law adequately protects consumers without locking ourselves out of perfectly legitimate sweepstakes."
