Sweepstakes Newsletters - Should I Sign Up?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Sweepstakes Newsletters - Should I Sign Up?

Many sweepstakes offer optional subscription to their newsletters and emails. If I sign up for sweepstakes newsletters, will I improve my chances of winning?

Answer: Some sweepstakes newsletters are required to participate. If Opting In to emails is optional, though, you don't have to worry that you won't be picked as a winner because you chose not to receive any mail.

However, you may want to opt-in anyway. Here are three good reasons to opt-in to sweepstakes emails.

  1. Be the First to Know about New Sweepstakes
Sponsors who hold one great sweepstake are likely to hold more. And the first people they'll tell about a new prize giveaway are the people on the newsletter list. Finding out about a daily sweep a few days earlier than the masses could help you win more prizes. So signing up for sponsor emails could pay off for you down the road.

  2. Encourage Even More Sweepstakes
One of the ways the sponsors judge how successful their sweepstakes are is by the number of new people who sign up for their mailing lists. By helping to make sweepstakes more successful, you're also encouraging sponsors to offer more prizes.

  3. Get Great Deals
Even aside from raising your chance of winning sweepstakes, sponsor emails can be a great way to receive news of specials, sales, and great deals. Signing up could be a real benefit for you.

Won't I Be Deluged by Mails if I Sign Up for Sweepstakes Newsletters?
Most legitimate sponsors are careful that they don't go overboard with their newsletter mailings. After all, if they annoy the people on their list, they can expect a poor response. It's a good idea to check out the privacy policy before entering, however, to see how your information will be used.

What If I Don't Like the Sweepstakes Newsletter? According to the CAN-SPAM law, businesses have to give people the option to opt-out of any email list with every mailing. If you decide you don't enjoy the emails you are receiving, just unsubscribe.

In short, don't opt-in to sweepstakes newsletters because you fear you'll be blacklisted from winning if you don't. However, signing up and trying out sweepstakes newsletters can really pay off for you, and you can always change your mind later if you don't enjoy the mails.
