Why Do Sweepstakes Sponsors Ask for Referrals?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Why Do Sweepstakes Sponsors Ask for Referrals?

Many sweepstakes that I enter have fields on their entry forms that invite me to "Tell a Friend" or something similar. Some sweepstakes even offer additional entries to do so. Why do sponsors do this?

Answer: Companies usually sponsor sweepstakes to generate buzz about their websites, products, or services. The more people who hear about their promotion, the more successful it will be. To spread the word as far as possible, many sponsors encourage entrants to tell friends and family members about the sweepstakes in the hopes that those friends will tell their friends, and so on. As an additional incentive to spread the news, some sweepstakes even offer additional entries or chances to win for people who use referrals.
