2010 HGTV Green Home - Facts and Background about the Green Home 2010

By , About.com Guide

Overview of the HGTV Green Home Sweepstakes:

The Green Home Sweepstakes, which began in 2008, is a television series where HGTV builds and then gives away a home that is both beautiful and environmentally-friendly. The idea behind the Green Home sweepstakes is to feature green building strategies like conserving gas by buying locally, using durable products that reduce waste, and emphasizing energy and water efficiency.

The Green Home Sweepstakes' total prize value is less than HGTV's famous Dream Home Sweepstakes, which means that it's easier for the winner to keep and live in the home.

2010 Green Home Sweepstakes Entry ended on June 4, 2010.

Entry Dates for the HGTV Green Home Sweepstakes 2010:

HGTV's Green Home 2010 Sweepstakes will open for entry on April 16, 2010. Previous Green Home Sweepstakes were open to US residents aged 21 and above.

Location of the 2010 Green Home:

The 2010 HGTV Green Home is located in Pinehills, a village-style community in historic Plymouth, Massachusetts. Founded by the Pilgrims who came to America on the Mayflower, Plymouth is one of the oldest towns in America. Plymouth is conveniently located close to Boston, but is still a picturesque place to live. It is surrounded by beautiful beaches and quaint, New England-style cottages. It's also a seafood-lover's paradise.

To see the Green Home's location for yourself, visit HGTV's slide show of Plymouth and Cape Cod or read about visiting Plymouth Rock from About.com's New England Guide.

2010 Green Home Designers:

As with last year's show, the overall designer of the 2010 Green Home is Jack Thomasson, a highly-experienced home and landscaping designer. The interior designer is Linda Woodrum, who has also helped design the beautiful interiors of HGTV's Dream Homes. The builders are Glenn MacKenzie and Gary MacKenzie, while the architect is Walter Yarosh.

Exterior of the 2010 HGTV Green Home:

The 2010 HGTV Green Home was inspired by the New England cottage-style homes that surround it in Plymouth - but it's full of unique special features that set it apart. The 2,100 square-foot cottage has two stories and a third-story tower. It has a huge garage separated from the main part of the house by a laundry room and mudroom.

Why Build Green?:

  • Emphasizing durability, which prevents the need to discard and replace materials.
  • Using energy and water efficiently to make the most of the resources we have.

What Makes the 2010 Green Home Green?:

Some of the 2010 Green Home's green features include:

  • Big windows made of Andersen Low-E4 SmartSun glass, which let in light while blocking heat and UV rays.
