2011 HGTV Green Home - All About the Green Home 2011 from HGTV

By , About.com Guide

Overview of the HGTV Green Home Sweepstakes:

The Green Home Sweepstakes, which began in 2008, is an annual television series where HGTV showcases green home construction techniques by building, and then giving away, a home that is both beautiful and environmentally-friendly. Some of the green building strategies that are commonly used in the series include buying local materials to conserve gas, using durable or recycled products that reduce waste, and emphasizing energy and water efficiency. Many of these green building techniques also save money for the home owner in the long run.

The Green Home Sweepstakes' total prize value is less than HGTV's famous Dream Home Sweepstakes, which means that it's easier for the winner to keep and live in the home.

Entry Dates for the HGTV Green Home Sweepstakes 2011:

HGTV's Green Home 2011 Sweepstakes will open for entry on April 14, 2011 and will run through June 2, 2011. It will be open to residents of the US and US territories who are above the age of 21. As in the 2011 Dream Home Sweepstakes, you'll be able to enter twice daily, once through HGTV and once through Frontdoor.com.

2011 Green Home Location - Stapleton, Colorado:

The 2011 HGTV Green Home is located in Denver, Colorado in the eco-friendly community of Stapleton. The people of Colorado are famed for being environmentally-conscious, and the community of Stapleton is a good example. Stapleton is one of the "largest urban redevelopments in the United States," according to a Stapleton press release.

Stapleton was founded in 2001 on the site of the former Stapleton International Airport, which was replaced by the Denver International Airport in 1995. The community was designed to be green and sustainable, with nearly a third of its 4,700 acres devoted to public park space. Some of Stapleton's green features include:

  • Every home in Stapleton is required to comply with strict green building standards and Energy Star standards.
  • 6 million tons of concrete from former airport runways were recycled into roads.
  • City planning that emphasized walking over driving.
  • The highest voluntary recycling rate, with 93% of residents recycling.
  • And more
Stapleton is an ideal setting for the HGTV Green Home's environmental goals.

2011 Green Home Designers:

  • As with previous years, the 2011 HGTV Green Home was designed by Jack Thomasson, a highly-experienced home and landscaping designer.
  • The interior designer is Linda Woodrum, who has also helped design the beautiful interiors of HGTV's Dream Homes.
  • Mike Woodley is the architect, and the actual building was performed by Infinity Home Collection.

Design of the 2011 HGTV Green Home:

The 2011 HGTV Green Home is described by HGTV as a "modern prairie-style design." It achieved a LEED Platinum certification, which means that the home rates well in terms of efficiency, green use of materials, and more.

The home itself features 2,400 square feet of living space, spread out over two floors.

See the 2011 Green Home Rendering and Floor Plan on HGTV's website for more details.

Why Build Green?:

The 2010 Green Home is designed to not only protect the environment, but also lower costs for the homeowner in terms of utility, heating, and cooling costs.

Some of the design principles that go into building green homes include:

  • Buying local whenever possible, to reduce pollution and wasted gas from shipping.
  • Using recycled materials, which keeps them out of landfills while reducing the need to use up natural resources to create new materials.
  • Emphasizing durability, which prevents the need to discard and replace materials.
  • Using energy and water efficiently to make the most of the resources we have.

What Makes the 2011 Green Home Green?:

Some of the 2011 Green Home's environmental features include:

  • Water-saving features in the garden, including a drip irrigation system and drought-resistant planting.
  • Low-emission hardwood floors harvested from responsibly-managed forests.
  • Energy-efficient windows that block harmful UV rays and lower heating and cooling costs.
  • Solar panels to produce energy.
  • High-efficiency heating and cooling systems.
  • Locally-sourced building materials.
  • And much more. See the Green Home Interactive Tool on the HGTV website for more details.
