Stapleton was founded in 2001 on the site of the former Stapleton International Airport, which was replaced by the Denver International Airport in 1995. The community was designed to be green and sustainable, with nearly a third of its 4,700 acres devoted to public park space. Some of Stapleton's green features include:

- As with previous years, the 2011 HGTV Green Home was designed by Jack Thomasson, a highly-experienced home and landscaping designer.

- Mike Woodley is the architect, and the actual building was performed by Infinity Home Collection.

The 2011 HGTV Green Home is described by HGTV as a "modern prairie-style design." It achieved a LEED Platinum certification, which means that the home rates well in terms of efficiency, green use of materials, and more.
The home itself features 2,400 square feet of living space, spread out over two floors.
