Winner of the 2020 HGTV Smart Home Sweepstakes in Pittsburgh, PA

The 2020 HGTV Smart Home is a three-story Craftsman-style home with a cool, modern aesthetic. And of course, it's full of the latest technology. Its 4,500 square feet include a beautiful, double-decker back porch, a lovely open-plan first floor, and a master bedroom suite to die for, including a huge walk-in closet and a spacious bath. And of course, there are smart features throughout, including a security system and programmable showers, lighting, and skylights. The $1.5 million prize also includes a Mercedes-Benz GLB vehicle and $100,000 in cash.

The winner of this enormous prize pack was Jyll Doubleday, a mom of two from Santa Barbara, California. Jill entered the giveaway twice every day, the maximum number of times allowed by the rules. Her name was drawn from among 103 million entries!

Usually, HTML ambushes the winners of their huge home giveaways in person, but due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the news was given virtually in 2020. Designer Tiffany Brooks worked with Jill's friends to get her on a conference call to hear the news.

 "I never win anything!" Jill gasped when she realized what was happening.

Winner of the 2019 HGTV Smart Home in Roanoke, Texas

The 2019 HGTV Smart Home is a custom single-level home with an updated Texas style located in Roanoke, Texas, a suburb of Dallas. The 3,400 square foot home featured three bedrooms, three and a half baths, a 3D movie theater, a laundry room with its own dog washing station, and more. The $1.2 million prize also included a 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE and $100,000.

The winner of the 2019 HGTV Smart Home is Maureen Rustrian of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, whose name was drawn from among 97 million entries.

Maureen Rustrian is a credit analyst who has been entering the Smart Home Giveaway for many years. She said she entered twice per day online, every day the giveaway was open.

HGTV ambushed Maureen's husband first and asked him to help them plan the perfect surprise. Maureen's husband then told her they were planning a party for an out-of-town friend who was coming for a visit.

"I thought it was a joke at first, but then I... heard Tiffany’s voice – it’s so distinct – and it slowly started to sink in," Maureen said.

Winner of the 2018 HGTV Smart Home in Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina

The 2018 HGTV Smart Home is a two-story Coastal-style home located in a private community in Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina. This 2,850 square-foot home was located right on the  May River and has three bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms. Aside from the house and all its furnishings, the prize also included a $100,000 check and a 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e Plug-In Hybrid vehicle.

The winner of the 2018 Smart Home in Arizona is Josephine Montgomery of Long Island, New York. After 20 years of watching HGTV and dreaming about their lovely homes, her name was drawn as a winner from among 95 million total entries.

Josephine Montgomery is a retiree whose home was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

When HGTV found out that Montgomery was planning on throwing a barbeque for her daughter's birthday, they knew that they had found the perfect time for a winner ambush.

They created a video to play at the party, which started off with Josephine Montgomery's grandchildren saying how much they loved her and ended with HGTV celebrities telling her to look behind her.

There, Smart Home designer Tiffany Brooks waited with the news that Josephine Montgomery was the winner of the $1.6 million prize.

“At first, I thought it was Candid Camera,”  Montgomery remembered.

Winner of the 2017 HGTV Smart Home in Scottsdale, Arizona:

The 2017 HGTV Smart Home is a sprawling 3,300 square foot Southwestern-style home located in the desert of Arizona. Full of smart technology, this home featured a terrace with a misting system to keep cool in the summer, its own pool, a home office, and many other great features. The prize also included a $100,000 check and a Mercedes-Benz GLE 550e 4MATIC vehicle.

The winner of the 2017 Smart Home in Arizona is Stacy Bolder of Tomahawk, Wisconsin. Her name was drawn from among 87 million total entries.

Stacy Bolder was ambushed by HGTV host Tiffany Brooks at a local sports bar, where Bolder thought that she was getting together with friends and family to celebrate her 40th birthday. Brooks pretended she was a server, up to the point where she presented Bolder with an ice cream cake that read, "You Are the Winner!"

“I thought this was a weird 40th birthday cake,” Bolder laughed.

Bolder said that she had entered the giveaway every day, but said, “I never in a million years thought this would ever happen to me!”  She was spurred to enter the giveaway by the thought that the home was close to Phoenix, where her sister and brother-in-law live.

Winner of the 2016 HGTV Smart Home in Raleigh, North Carolina:

The 2016 HGTV Smart Home is a three-level Craftsman-style house in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The winner of the 2016 HGTV Smart Home is Theresa Smith of Glenwood, Maryland.

Theresa Smith thought the entire family had been gathered to celebrate her sister's birthday. Little did she know that the Smart Home's designer, Tiffany Brooks, would show up to tell her that she was a big prize winner.

"I'm in a state of complete and total gratitude," Theresa Smith gushed. "This is the best thing that's ever happened to me, other than having my kids."

Winner of the 2015 HGTV Smart Home in Austin, Texas

The 2015 HGTV Smart Home is a modern farmhouse-style home in Austin, Texas. 40 million people entered to win this prize, which also included a 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class and a $100,000 cash prize.

The winner of the 2015 Smart Home was Isabel Villarreal, an elementary school principal from nearby Harlingen, Texas. "The location of the home was very special, partly because I am from Texas and I was born not too far from the home," Villarreal said.

An avid HGTV fan, Isabel Villarreal entered online twice a day, every day throughout the entry period of the sweepstakes.

Despite loving the HGTV Smart Home and its location, Isabel Villarreal decided to take the cash option instead of keeping the house and facing a hefty tax bill, according to an article on Chron.com.

"I wish I could keep it, it's the most beautiful house I've seen in all my life," Villarreal was quoted as saying. 

The decision is no surprise; most people who win HGTV's big house prizes end up selling. But like the other winners, Villarreal is thrilled with the experience. Winning the home "was the most wonderful news I had heard in my entire life," she said.

Winner of the 2014 HGTV Smart Home in Nashville, Tennessee

The 2014 HGTV Smart Home is a Tudor-style home in the heart of country music: Nashville, Tennessee. The million-dollar prize included the house, a Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, and a $100,000 cash prize, 

 The 2014 HGTV Smart Home winner was Ashley King of Chicago, Illinois. Her name was drawn from nearly 49 million entries.

King was a graduate student who lived with her parents and drove a 16-year-old hand-me-down car. She was astounded at her luck winning the huge prize.

"When you enter these contests, for me at least, you don’t think much of it because you know it’s one of those one in a million chances and you never really think it is going to happen to you,” Ashley King said. “I’m still shocked. I didn’t realize how big this would be and I don’t know when this surprised feeling will subside."

As with many other winners, Ashley King chose to take the cash option, and the 2014 Smart Home was listed for sale with an asking prize of $950,000.

Winner of the 1st HGTV Smart Home in Jacksonville Beach, Florida

The 2013 HGTV Smart Home, the very first HGTV home giveaway to focus on smart home technology was a shingle-style vacation home in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Aside from the home, the $900,000 prize included a 2013 GMC Terrain Denali vehicle and $100,000 cash.

The 2013 HGTV Smart Home winner was Peggy Walker, a retired special education teacher who lives on a 200-acre dairy farm in River Falls, Wisconsin. Her name was chosen from among about 40 million entries.

Peggy Walker had been trying to win a home from HGTV's giveaways for years before her name was drawn. "My advice to others is to enter every day because one day it could be you, too!" she said.

Peggy Walker had no desire to leave the farm, which had been in her husband's family since the 1800s. She accepted the cash option instead of taking possession of the HGTV Smart Home 2013.
