Can I Enter Flash Sweepstakes Without Installing Flash?

By Sandra Grauschopf, About.com

Question: Can I Enter Flash Sweepstakes Without Installing Flash?

I enter sweepstakes from a computer at a public library that doesn't allow me to install any programs. Unfortunately, these computers don't have Flash running on them. Is it still possible to enter Flash sweepstakes without installing Flash?

Answer:

More and more sponsors are choosing to run Flash Sweepstakes. Flash is a free program that will work with most computers, and if you're having trouble with Flash sweepstakes on your home computer, you should check out my article on trouble-shooting Flash sweepstakes.

Sometimes, however, you're stuck using a computer that doesn't have Flash installed, and there's nothing you can do about it. Maybe you're using the computers at a public library or at work, and you're not allowed to install anything. Or maybe you're borrowing a friend's computer and don't want to mess with their settings.

If you can't install Flash on your sweepstakes computer, there are a few things that you can do to try to enter anyway. These include:

  1. Look for a Non-Flash Sweepstakes Option
Many Flash sweepstakes realize that not all users have the plug-in installed. Many will offer an alternate version of the website (look for a link that says something about viewing the site in HTML) or a link to bypass a Flash game (look for a link that says something like, "Can't see the game?" or "Skip the game." Using these options, you won't have to worry about Flash at all.

  2. Bring Flash With You
For just a few dollars, you can buy a small, portable hard drive called a Jump Drive (read more about Jump Drives from About's Guide to Peripherals). Jump drives are small -- often about the size of a stick of gum -- and can even be attached to a keychain. They plug right into a computer, and they can hold an internet browser pre-installed with Flash.

The Mozilla website has information about How to Use Firefox with a Jump Drive. You can also install a portable version of Roboform, called Roboform2Go on your jump drive, and carry your entry information with you.

  3. Enter by Mail
If you can't enter online because of issues with Flash, you can also look for a mail-in option to enter the sweepstakes. Entering by mail bypasses any technical issues with the sweepstakes, including Flash problems. Look in the sweepstakes rules for a mail-in option if all else fails with online entry.
