URL Definition - What Is a URL?

By

Definition: URL is an abbreviation that stands for "Universal Resource Locator." It's another name for a web address, the address that you type into your internet browser when you want to go to a website.

A URL is a lot like a house address. You can give someone a house address to let them know where to find a house or business they're looking for. You can give your browser a URL to let it know where to go to find the website you want to visit.

A URL often (but not always) starts with "http://" and then "www." A URL that starts with "https://" indicates that you're on a secure site. That means that if you enter personal information on that site, it will be encrypted before it's transmitted so that it cannot be intercepted by other people.

Also Known As: Universal Resource Locator, web address, internet address
Examples:
  • The URL for About.com Contests is http://contests.about.com.
  • I'd like to enter that sweepstakes. What is the URL?
