Another Chance to Win Your Dream Home on the Way

By February 12, 2009

One of the most common complaints I've heard about the Dream Home Sweepstakes is that the taxes on the gorgeous homes that HGTV designs are usually too high to allow the winners to keep the home.

I've long maintained that the experience of winning, including the chance to stay in the home for months or years and all of the extras that come with it, are worth having to sell the house eventually and take the cash (and Dream Home Winner Don Cruz agrees with me).

However, for those of you who'd love to win a home that you can keep, there's a new chance coming up in Southern Living's Choose Your Home Giveaway, presented by MyHomeIdeas. The home giveaway is scheduled to begin on March 23, 2009.

The Choose Your Home Sweepstakes has an interesting twist -- instead of creating a home and then giving it away, MyHomeIdeas is going to pick a winner and then allow the winner to decide which of four different home choices they want to receive.

The four choices include a mountain retreat outside of Asheville, North Carolina, a 3-bedroom cottage close to the shore near Beaufort, South Carolina, a family-style home complete with a beautiful shaded porch in Camp Callaway at Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, Georgia, and a cozy cottage near the Texas A&M campus in Bryan, Texas.

For more information, including floor plans and detailed descriptions of each community, visit the Choose Your Home Giveaway website.

First, I have to admit, I really like your blog. You cover the best of the best.

Question for you Do you have sites you could recommend that would outine what to expect once you’re chosen to win a house? Real estate taxes, closing costs, etc make me really nervous.

I never really understood why HGTV doesn’t simply give away a 1.5 million dollar house and 500,000 dollars cash to deal with taxes rather than a 2 million dollar house.

(Although I would die with joy if I won a 2 Million dollar house anyway, lol. Wish I could enter, annoying having to be 21 to enter)

They used to give away cash to help defray taxes. I don’t know why they don’t any more, except that maybe it works out better for them to show off their talents by investing more in the home. Remember that the goal for them is to design an absolutely out-of-this-world home, because that’s what really wows people who watch their special.
