Many companies invite you to text short codes
to enter text message sweepstakes or receive coupons and special offers. But how do you send a text message to a short code? It's easy, and here's how:
Time Required: Texting a short code takes only a few seconds.
Navigate to the Text Message Section of Your Phone or Mobile Device
To get started, navigate to the section of your mobile phone that allows you to send text messages. If you're not sure how to send text messages on your mobile phone, check out these tips from About.com's Cell Phone Guide: How to Type and Send SMS Messages .
Compose Your Text Message
Usually, your text message only needs to include the keyword indicated in the sweepstakes' rules or in the advertisement you're answering.
Send the Text to the Short Code Number
After you have composed your text message, navigate to the area where you can enter the phone number to send the text message to. Enter the short code number and press send. If the short code is given as a word (like DISNEY), use your keypad to figure out which numbers go with which letters.
How to Unsubscribe from Receiving Text Messages
Many times, sending a text message to a short code will automatically opt you in to receiving ads from the sponsor. If your mobile phone provider charges you per text message received, you may have to pay for these ads. Usually, texting "STOP" to the same short code will unsubscribe you. If that doesn't work, try texting "HELP" to the short code to see options. If neither works, check the sweepstakes rules or the advertisement that listed the short code for information about how to unsubscribe.
