Summarize the Sweepstakes Scam

On 11/02/09 at 10:00am i received a call on my cell phone while i was in the hospital with my husband who had a liver transplant on October 2nd. The man who called ID'd himself as being with PCH Sweepstakes and asked if I was (my name) in Florida. I told him I was. Then he said that I had won $500,000.00 in the sweepstakes. He then asked if I was married and if I was a US citizen. I answered yes. He then asked if I could be home on Wednesday, November 4th to get the bank check "special delivered". I said yes. He would not give his name or other info. The check never came! Why would and how could anyone do this?

More Details about the Sweepstakes Scam

Of course, I was very exited and told the man how much we needed the money and what a God send it was, and that I had prayed for weeks to win something. And that winning the money would spare us from losing our home of 20+ years to foreclosure. If this was not a scam, then I won't know what is. But, why?

Tips and Tricks

  • Don't pay money to enter sweepstakes.
  • Don't believe everything you're told. For example, we were offered a room heater for $135, after a rebate of $310. I purchased the same heater at Home Depot for $10.
  • If someone will not give you their name or other details, hang up the phone. You'll save yourself a lot of heartache, time, and you will keep some of your confidence in others.
