Summarize the Sweepstakes Scam

On April 16th 2010 a man called and asked if my name was Ms. Es***, I said yes he was hard to understand because his accent was very strong. It sounded like India or Pakastan. He said I had won 3.5 million dollars from Publishers Clearing House and needed directions to my home. He then asked if I were alone. I told him no. My husband, son, and aunt were with me. He said they would be here in 30 minutes, if that was okay with me. Of course I wanted it. He did not ask for anything. However if I had been alone it may have been different. No one showed up. I got on the computer and looked up Publishers Clearing House

More Details about the Sweepstakes Scam

I had entered some contests, but I was almost sure I hadn't entered Publishers Clearing House. The person asked for me by my maiden name. I asked him what I had to buy to win; he kinda hesitated then said nothing. After that, he said something about how they would be there in 30 minutes and added a new car. I guess if it was a scam anyway, he could throw in a new car. Haha, might as well laugh, at least he didn't get anything from us!

Tips and Tricks

  • I wanted to report this because someone else may not be as blessed as I was. Please let the public know. I am making sure to tell everyone I know about this. I'm glad the information is there on your site. Thank you.

Sandra Grauschopf, Contests & Sweepstakes Guide, says:

Good catch, Vanie! Remember that you should never give out directions to your home to any so-called sweepstakes sponsor on the phone. Publisher's Clearing House will find your house on their own, and they won't tell you ahead of time that you're a winner, because they want to surprise you.
